Deontay Wilder drops powerful video after George Floyd’s death, mass protests

Former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder dropped a powerful video on Friday afternoon speaking out following the death of George Floyd and the massive, consistent protests and riots that have followed across the country.

Wilder, in a minute-long video posted to Twitter, delivered a poem while standing on a gravel road in the middle of the woods to share his thoughts on Floyd’s death and the larger conversation taking place about racism both in the United States and around the world.

“Dark like molasses, black like the night. United we stand, together we fight,” Wilder said, in part. “Fighting for Ahmaud Arbery and all of the others. Tell me why y’all killing all our sisters and brothers. To this day, I don’t remember a time when none of my people did anything to you people other than work hard and try to be equal. Now y’all mad at protesters and riots. We showed you nothing but peace. We done being quiet.”

Wilder is among the countless professional athletes to speak out after Floyd’s death late last month and video of his arrest went viral. That video showed a white Minneapolis police officer with his knee in the back of Floyd’s neck for more than seven minutes while he yelled out, “I can’t breathe.” All four officers involved in his arrest have since been arrested themselves.

Wilder also referenced several other deaths in his video, including Ahmaud Arbery — who was jogging in Georgia in February when he was shot and killed by two white men.

Floyd’s death, along with others, have sparked massive protests in cities across the country that continued on Friday night.

Wilder is fresh off his loss to Tyson Fury at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in February, a rematch of their split decision bout in 2018. The 34-year-old, who boasts a 42-1-1 record, is set to take on Fury for a third time this fall.
