If you’re an electrician in Australia, you could be worth more than you realise.
Demand for electricians increased across all Australian states in the twelve months ending October 2018, according to recent SEEK data.

Electricians are most sought after in Victoria, with the number of available jobs rising 66 per cent, while demand for electricians in NSW rose 20 per cent.
The job ad volume for sparkies in Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland all rose by 36 per cent, 22 per cent and 15 per cent respectively.
But your salary will vary depending on which state you work in: electricians in Western Australia earn the highest among all the states, raking in $102,375.
Sparkies in Queensland earn $84,818 a year on average, with NSW following closely behind at $83,473.
Despite the demand for electricians being highest in Victoria, South Australian and Victorian sparkies take home an average annual salary of $74,756.
Why are electricians so in demand in Victoria?
Seek managing director Kendra Banks told Yahoo Finance that the demand for electricians in Victoria is being driven by a wider employment market in the state as well as key infrastructure and construction projects.
Also, the need for electricians has not been negatively affected by automation due to the non-routine and problem-solving nature of their work.
“The demand for electricians and pressure on candidate availability is being driven by the current, and projected, construction and infrastructure work across Victoria, where there is a focus on heavy industrial and specialised experience.
“To make sure we are meeting the demand for candidates we need to educate people on the exciting career prospects within the electrician trade and its longevity,” Banks said.
Michael Bateman, Protech business manager, Victoria, added that clients were seeking electricians with specialised skillsets.

For example, there is an increased requirement for High Voltage/Commissioning Technicians to service the demand in construction and infrastructure work, electricians with Data/AV Specialisations within Facility Management and for electricians in the facility maintenance and service industry, which service health care facilities and schools, he said.
“We are also seeing a significant increase in demand for electrical apprentices within the Commercial industry for both general and data cabling work.”
