Deadline for $25,000 HomeBuilder grant extended

The government is extending the paperwork deadline for the HomeBuilder scheme, giving Aussie homeowners more time to cash in on the $25,000 grant.

Aussies who would otherwise miss the current deadline of April 30, 2023, will have until June 30, 2025 to submit their supporting documentation, subject to the agreement of states and territories.

The extension will only apply to existing, already-approved HomeBuilder applicants who have received formal approval for off-the-plan purchases or renovations, but have been impacted by supply constraints and construction-industry delays.

The average construction time frames for off-the-plan units had blown out to more than two years, the government said.

To receive the HomeBuilder grant, off-the-plan or new home purchases need to provide title documents. This is only issued when construction is completed.

That means thousands of HomeBuilder applicants stood to miss out on the grant under the previous April 30 deadline.

“Too many Australians stood to miss out on support they believed they would receive, through no fault of their own,” Minister for Housing Julie Collins said.

“This decision will not cost the budget, but it will ease the burden on families right across the country who are relying on this grant.”

Master Builders Australia welcomed the extension and said weather disruptions and supply chain constraints had caused “unprecedented delays to building timelines”.

“We have seen the average time it takes to build a home shift from nine to over 12 months,” Master Builders Australia CEO Denita Wawn said.

What is the HomeBuilder scheme?

The HomeBuilder scheme was introduced by the previous federal government during the COVID pandemic. The program closed to new applications on April 14, 2021. It will not reopen.

Under the scheme, eligible owner-occupiers could receive a grant to build a new home or substantially renovate an existing home.

A $25,000 grant was available for eligible contracts signed between June 4, 2020 and December 31, 2020. A $15,000 grant was available for contracts signed between January 1, 2021 and March 31, 2021.

For new builds, the grant is paid after foundations have been laid and the first progress payment has been made to the builder. For substantial renovations, it is when construction has started and at least $150,000 has been paid. For off-the-plan and new home contracts, it is when the applicant’s name is registered on the title.
