Yahoo Finance Dak Prescott has successful surgery, expected to be released from hospital on Monday
The long road to recovery for Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has already started.
The team said Monday morning that Prescott had successful surgery for a dislocated right ankle, which included a compound fracture. He was expected to be released from the hospital on Monday.
As we saw with Alex Smith’s injury a couple years ago, there’s a higher chance of infection when a compound fracture is involved. Prescott will obviously be watched closely in the upcoming weeks. And then he’ll start a complicated few months on the road back.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys reportedly signed quarterback Garrett Gilbert from the Cleveland Browns practice squad Monday afternoon.
Dak Prescott faces long road back
Prescott suffered the injury, which is bound to be forever included in the history of the most stunning and graphic on-field injuries we have witnessed, when he was tackled in the third quarter by New York Giants cornerback Logan Ryan. Due to the CBS angle of Prescott and the fact that he was sitting alone right after the tackle, everyone watching could immediately see and understand how serious of an injury it was.
There were implications beyond this lost season. Prescott is on a one-year franchise tag and will enter next offseason without a contract coming off a brutal injury. The initial word is that the expected recovery time is 4-6 months, sources told David Moore of the Dallas Morning News.
That would put Prescott back on the field for his team’s offseason program. Whether that team is the Cowboys or another will be sorted out next March.
Contract negotiations will be complicated
The Cowboys and Prescott couldn’t come to an agreement on a long-term deal, and negotiations won’t be easier this time around.
Dallas could franchise tag Prescott again, but it’s expensive. There’s a risk involved with a quarterback coming off an injury like Prescott suffered. One of Prescott’s strengths is his mobility, and it’s impossible to know how that will be affected until long after a contract decision has to be made. Also, the 4-6 month timetable seems optimistic given the injury. We can’t know yet if there will be setbacks or how his recovery will go.
For now, all Prescott can do is take it one step at a time. His surgery went well and it sounds like he’ll be released from the hospital. That’s a start.
