Dad dies after being 'punched during queue-jumping row’

A man who was seriously injured after an assault last week at a hardware store has died in hospital, with police now confirming a homicide investigation in underway.

About 10am on July 2, officers attached to the Cheshire Police in the UK responded to reports of an incident in Warrington.

Upon arrival, officers found there had been an altercation between two men at the Screwfix shop, and police arrested a 24-year-old man at the scene while a 51-year-old man was taken to hospital.

The 24-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assault and was released on conditional bail on July 2.

The 51-year-old man has been identified as Andrew Webster, from Warrington.

The Sun reported there had been rumours the two men got into an altercation over queue jumping, however the rumours were not confirmed by staff at the store.

The Sun reported due to the coronavirus pandemic, the home-improvement store had been operating at limited capacity and there had been long lines of customers outside the store.

Cheshire Police have since reported Mr Webster has died in hospital.

“Andrew Webster from Warrington was taken to hospital but sadly died. His family are being supported by specialist officers,” the police statement said.

The Warrington Guardian reported Mr Webster had been in a coma prior to his death and detectives are now treating the probe as a homicide investigation.

Mr Webster leaves behind a daughter and a wife, according to The Sun.

“I want you all to know he was my true hero,” his wife Lisa wrote on Facebook, where she described him as the “most amazing, bravest guy”, the publication reported.

Police believe this was an isolated incident, however police presence was increased in the area to “provide reassurance” following the alleged assault.

On July 2, Detective Sergeant Candice Sivori urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.

“We’re keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident, or anyone with any information which may assist with our investigation,” Det Sivori said.

“The same goes for anyone who was driving in the area at the time of the incident and thinks they may have dashcam footage which may be relevant to the investigation.”

When the police announced Mr Webster had died on July 8, the statement once again urged anyone with information to come forward.
