Thousands of little furry legs have been spotted walking around Melbourne breaking the Guinness World Record for the largest dog walk for a single breed.

Devoted 2 Dachshunds Rescue organised the world record attempt at Point Ormond Reserve in Elwood, Victoria, where more than 1000 owners showed up in support on Sunday.

The current Guinness World Record for the largest dog walk stands at 1029 pooches, with Beagles being the dog of choice for the 2018 winning attempt in the UK.

Dachshund owner Trent Kovacic said he believed there was close 1500 to 2000 dogs participating in the record breaking attempt on Sunday.

“Our daughters loved it and our two sausage dogs, Frank and Bonny, did too,” Mr Kovacic said.

“We’re sausage dogs fanatics, we love our sausage dogs.”

“My wife and I have always just love the sausage dog, their small size and their cuddliness.

“They’ve got a great personality for a small dog.

Mr Kovacic said he was excited to be a part new world record.

Organiser Adele Gullick told Today Weekend the Melbourne event looked “on track to break the record”.

“We just have to adhere to the really strict Guinness rules and regulations,” Ms Gullick said.

Those rules include only one dog can be walked with one person and dogs in prams will be counted.

Despite the cold, the four-legged friends were allowed to wear their winter coats despite the other rule that fancy dress is banned.

The dogs also had to be pure dachshunds to be counted, according to Guinness World Records.

Dogs and their owners enjoyed the long walk through the brisk Sunday air, with many making friends along the way.

Guinness World Records will also analyse drone footage and photographs to authorise the successful record attempt.
