Cubs vs Cardinals tickets soar after Chicago win

Want to see the Chicago Cubs in postseason action against their archrivals? Get ready to pay up.

The average ticket price for the Cubs series against the St. Louis Cardinals was $459.68 as of Thursday morning, according to TiqIQ, a ticket marketplace, the highest ever for a division series since the company began tracking prices in 2010.

The average prices for other division series ranged between roughly $230 and $250.

The Cubs made it to the National League Division Series after beating the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday in the NL wild-card game. The contest also marked the first playoff appearance by the much-maligned Chicago franchise since 2008.

The club has also not won a World Series since 1908, making fans even more excited for the series and thus propping up prices.

"It's a beyond-starved fan base and a city that has gotten very familiar to winning, especially with the Chicago Blackhawks," said Jesse Lawrence, founder and CEO of TiqIQ. He also said that fans in Chicago are typically willing to pay top dollar for playoff games. The National Hockey League's Blackhawks are defending Stanley Cup champions and have won three of the last six.

Fans who want to attend a home game at Chicago's Wrigley Field will have to pay even more. The average price for games at the Cubs' historic stadium was $658.41, the highest home average ever in a division series, TiqIQ said.

Prices for Chicago's first home game this playoff series averaged $646.39, and the "get in price," or the cheapest tickets, averaged $331 (think nosebleed seats).

"To put this in perspective, the 'get in' price for this game is close to or on the same plane as some NBA Finals, Stanley Cup and World Series prices," Matcovich said.

The Cubs and Cardinals will play Game 1 of the National League Division Series on Friday at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
