The Creator of 'Yellowstone' Just Dropped a Major Bombshell About the Show's Ending

From Good Housekeeping

  • Yellowstone is nearly halfway through its third season, which premiered on Sunday, June 21 on Paramount Network.

  • The hit series has already been picked up for season 4.

  • The show, led by Kevin Costner, remains the most-watched summer cable show.

When you love something, you never want to let it go — especially if it includes sweeping views of Montana's landscape, action-packed drama, and well, Kevin Costner on horseback. Although Yellowstone is still in its third season and already locked in to film the fourth later this year, the show's creator is starting to talk about — we hate to say it — the end of the Paramount Network series.

Based on what Taylor Sheridan, the creator and writer behind Yellowstone, said in a recent Deadline interview, it seems like the show will air for six seasons.

When asked if he'd given any thought to the length of Yellowstone, he responded:

I know how the series ends, and you have to move in a straight line toward that end. You can’t walk in circles, waiting to get there, because the show will stagnate. So, you have to keep moving forward, and there have to be consequences in the world, and there has to be an evolution toward a conclusion. Can that be another two seasons beyond this [season 4]? It could. I don’t see this as a procedural show.

While he understands that fans may want the show to go on forever, he mentioned that anything beyond six seasons would "cheapen the product."

But keep in mind that, for now, this is merely Sheridan's opinion. "I haven’t had that conversation with the network or the studio yet," he revealed. "I’m sure it’s coming, but I would think that you would want this to end on an upswing as opposed to a plateau or a descent." (FWIW, Yellowstone remains a ratings juggernaut as cable's most-watched summer show for the third year in a row.)

And while he's sure of how this will end, none of the actors on the show know exactly what's on Sheridan's mind. When talking about what's ahead for Monica during season 3, actress Kelsey Asbille told Good Housekeeping that there are still a lot of unknowns surrounding her character's — and the show's — future: "I am wondering how they'll [Kayce and Monica] move forward. It's funny because Taylor (Sheridan) has always told us that he knows how the show is going to end and I'd love to know," she said with a laugh.

For now, it seems like Sheridan's lips are sealed — and let's face it, it's probably for the best.
