Yahoo Finance Covid travel: Thailand to reopen doors to fully vaccinated tourists from ‘low-risk’ countries on November 1
Thailand is preparing to welcome back fully vaccinated visitors from November 1.
Double jabbed passengers arriving from a list of 45 “low risk” countries will not have to quarantine upon arrival.
They will have to show a negative Covid-19 test result both pre-departure and when landing in Thailand.
Included on the list is the UK, Germany, France, Australia, China, Japan and the US.
The second stage of re-opening is planned for December 1, and will see the end of a seven-month ban on alcohol in bars and restaurants.
“All the passengers will get their QR code checked by the Department of Disease Control,” said Kittipong Kittikachorn, the airport’s general manager.
“It will include all the details about insurance, vaccine certificate, or hotel booking.”
Since July, Phuket and Samui islands have been re-opened in pilot projects.
The move comes in a bid to revive the struggling tourism sector.
Some 18 months of coronavirus travel restrictions in Thailand has seen the popular tourist destination become a largely ‘no-go’ zone for holidaymakers.
The pandemic saw inbound traveller numbers sharply fall from 40 million in 2019 to just 73,000 in the first eight months of 2021.
It also saw the loss of three million tourism-dependent jobs and an estimated $50 billion a year in revenue.
China is Thailand's largest source of tourists, with 11 million visitors in 2019.
