Covid nurse's shock after thinking $1.3 million win was 'scam'

A nurse working in a Covid-19 unit at a hospital has won US$1 million (AU$1.3 million).

Terri Watkins, from the US state of North Carolina, claimed her prize from the North Carolina Education Lottery on Thursday (local time) from a scratchie.

“I thought that it was a scam. I was a little upset actually,” she said.

“I thought that it was not real, couldn’t be real.

“It’s still something that I really don’t believe, I’m still in some shock here.”

Ms Watkins added she’s “thankful” for her win particularly after what she’s seen happen to patients being ravaged by coronavirus.

“I had been praying for something to help me with this situation,” she said.

“It really is a great thing. I’m very blessed.”

She was asked what she would like to do with her winnings, but said she isn’t sure.

However, she “would love a new home”.

“I’m just gonna take it slow and easy and figure out what I’m gonna do,” she said.
