Marks and Spencer (MKS.L) has announced that it has teamed up with Costa Coffee in a collaboration which will see the coffee chain serving M&S Food products in its stores.

The items will launch next year in more than 2,500 Costa Coffee stores across the UK as well as in its drive- through sites.

The collaboration will be found at sites "not just on the high street, but in neighbourhood locations and retail parks," according to Stuart Machin, chief operating officer and M&S Food managing director.

The range will consist of 30 M&S Food items, including fresh sandwiches and salads, new lunch options, hot meal boxes and children’s food, and will build on Costa’s current food range.

The range will also feature "innovative products" to suit alternative dietary requirements from M&S's Plant Kitchen and Made Without brands.

Neil Lake, managing director, Costa Coffee UK&I, said: "Following the recent launch of our amazing new festive menu, we are delighted to bring further festive cheer by announcing a new food collaboration with M&S Food, launching next year.

"As we continue to craft new coffee experiences across our stores – Costa Express machines, Costa coffee in a can and an at-home offer – we are bringing together two of the very best brands in a UK-first to launch the Costa Coffee "Now Serving" M&S Food range.

"This collaboration with M&S Food will build on our existing food range and help us fulfil our ambition to become the first choice for customers buying food and coffee on-the-go. We’ll use our joint expertise to develop a food experience of the highest quality, freshness and value — all served with a perfectly crafted Costa coffee.”

Costa, owned by Coca-Cola Co (KO), is the UK's largest chain of coffee shops.

M&S said the move supported its strategy to make the retailer "more relevant, more often for families".

M&S shares were up 2% on Thursday.

Last week, the department store beat forecasts for first-half profit and upgraded its earnings outlook for the second time this year.
