Yahoo Finance Commonwealth Bank randomly drops $1200 prize into Aussie dad’s account: ‘Thought it was a scam’
A sneaky cash boost popped up for one Aussie dad, who had no idea his bank offered a monthly draw for 100 people to win $1,200.
An Australian father had no idea about Commonwealth Bank’s Yello loyalty program until a “wild” notification popped up on his phone saying he’d won $1,200.
The Sydneysider, who did not want to be identified, noticed the “cool $1,200 appear out of nowhere” when he checked his bank account on Wednesday.
“Straight into the account, no comms or anything. I thought it was some scam,” he told Yahoo Finance.

Then today a notification popped up on his phone, which gave a little context to the tidy cash boost. He was one of the 100 eligible people drawn out of a prize lottery each month.

“I’m still not sure what made me qualify,” he said. “Probably the mortgage.”
He’s correct. Home loan holders are eligible for the most benefits under the loyalty scheme, launched in 2022, if they make more than 30 transactions from a certain account.
But it’s not just mortgage holders, there’s another prize draw for $300 for Everyday Plus members.

How do I join and earn rewards with CommBank Yello?
CommBank said you will be invited if you’re eligible but you need to have one of the accounts listed here. There are three tiers; Everyday, Everyday Plus and Homeowner.
You then need to make at least five transactions for the lowest tier, and more than 30 for the two latter. These include making purchases on your card or digital wallet, withdrawals from an ATM, or transfers to other third parties.
