The Indianapolis Colts announced quarterback Jacoby Brissett is out for Sunday’s matchup with Miami as he deals with a sprained MCL in his knee.

Brian Hoyer will get the start for the Colts with Chad Kelly elevated from the practice squad to back him up.

The timing of the announcement is sure to prompt a few questions of how Brissett’s injury was handled. On Friday’s final injury report, the quarterback was listed as questionable after being a limited participant in practice this week.

Brissett will join wideout T.Y. Hilton (calf) on the sidelines as Indianapolis (5-3) welcomes the Dolphins (1-8) to Lucas Oil Stadium. From a purely precautionary standpoint, holding Brissett out makes plenty of sense. The Colts will face the Jaguars, Texans and Titans over the next three weeks and getting Brissett healthy for that stretch may prove crucial.

On the other hand, Miami’s defense ranks 29th in the league and allows the most points per game in the NFL. That’s about as perfect a situation for Hoyer to make his first start of the season given the circumstances.

Against Pittsburgh in Week 9, Hoyer replaced Brissett and completed 17 of 26 passes for 168 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. The Colts will gladly take that against a reeling Dolphins team.

A victory on Sunday would move the Colts into a tie for first place in the AFC South with the Texans, who are on a bye after playing in London last week.
