College student baffled by mom’s ‘weird’ reaction to her holiday party: ‘[She] doesn’t understand proper boundaries’

A 17-year-old student doesn’t want her 46-year-old mom at college parties. But her mother wants to be included.

She asked Reddit’s “Am I the A******?” forum for advice. When the teen told her mom about a Halloween party she threw at school, her mom was upset about not getting an invite. But the daughter thinks it would be unusual for her mom to be there.

“I moved out to go to college this year,” the teenager said. “I graduated early and did my freshman year online from home last year, so this year my mom agreed to let me move into an apartment right by my college (about an hour from home). She and I have always been super close, so I make sure to keep her updated with everything going on since I don’t see her as much.”

But things took a turn when her mom wanted to hang out with the teen’s college friends.

“This past weekend, I went home to visit and told her about a Halloween party my roommates and I threw,” the student wrote. “I thought she would be excited that I was making friends in college, but instead, she got upset that I never called and invited her. In my opinion, it’s weird for a parent to be at a college party where most of us are under 22, but she loves that lifestyle and is upset I’m not including her. She pays for my school, so I honestly feel guilty, but at the same time, I feel like it would be super weird for her to be there.”

Redditors thought the teen had every right not to invite her mom.

“[She] doesn’t understand proper boundaries with a nearly adult child,” someone commented.

“I think it would be weird if she were there,” another said.

“This would be a good chance to set healthy boundaries,” a user suggested.
