College Football Playoff: Explore Alabama, Ohio State championship trophies in augmented reality

The 2020 college football season has been one of the strangest yet. Between COVID-19 protocols and canceled games, teams have dealt with more adversity than ever before.

But a champion will still be crowned. The four College Football Playoff finalists — Alabama, Ohio State Clemson and Notre Dame — boast multiple championships over the years, and now you can interact with the titles in our augmented reality trophy case.

Alabama and Ohio State — who will face each other in the College Football Playoff national championship on Monday — own a combined 39 titles.

Alabama owns 15 titles, according to the NCAA, but the Crimson Tide have the most titles since 2009 — five in total. Nick Saban, arguably the greatest coach ever, has led the Tide to eight national championship games since arriving in Tuscaloosa in 2007. Alabama does, however, own quite a few sketchy claims to titles outside of Bear Bryant’s six and Nick Saban’s five. In the 1980s, the Tide athletic department added five pre-Bear Bryant titles from 1925, 1926, 1930, 1934 and 1941. Three of those were awarded by defunct polls not recognized by the NCAA.

Ohio State, meanwhile, but didn’t hoist its third championship until an improbable 2014 run during the first College Football Playoff, topping the Tide in the process.

Clemson, meanwhile, is more of a new-blood on the national stage. The Tigers only have three championships, but two since 2016. Notre Dame, who fell to Alabama in the Rose Bowl this year, have 13 titles, but the Fighting Irish are still searching for their first title since 1993.

Check out the interactive trophy case below on your desktop or mobile device to see all the different championship trophies for these four schools. Trophies varied year-to-year, so we added ones from the Rose Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, the Bowl Championship Series, the College Football Playoff and the Associated Press.
