Yahoo Finance Coles, Woolworths drop prices on 800 essential grocery items: ‘Stretch budgets further’
The price drops come as the Coles and Woolworths release their yearly profits this week.
Coles and Woolworths are cutting prices on hundreds of essential grocery items from Wednesday as part of their latest seasonal deals. It comes as the supermarket giants announce their yearly profits this week.
Coles is lowering the price of more than 360 products including meat, dairy and pantry staples for 12 weeks. The move means a total of 600 products will be on special in September, on top of weekly specials.
Woolworths, meanwhile, is dropping prices on more than 450 products including fresh proteins, pantry and household staples until November 26, or for about 13 weeks. The supermarket is also introducing a new Lower Shelf Price range, which will feature all year round rather than seasonally.

Coles has reported a 2.1 per cent increase on its statutory net profit after tax to $1.1 billion for the 2024 financial year. Woolworths is set to release its results tomorrow, it is expected to deliver a $1.67 billion net profit after tax.
The country’s second-biggest supermarket said the result was driven by strong growth in supermarket sales volumes and improved inventory management reducing theft-induced losses.
Online sales have also jumped, with the supermarket seeing a 30 per cent growth in grocery e-commerce sales.

What have the supermarkets said?
Coles chief commercial officer Anna Croft said the supermarket’s Spring Value pricing was about “helping stretch budgets a bit further”.
“From today through September, our customers will find more than 600 products on Down Down in store and online, covering all the entertaining essentials as well as household staples,” Croft said.
Woolworths chief commercial officer Paul Harker said the price drops would help customers better manage budgets as the weather heats up.
“In addition to our seasonal campaign, we’re also introducing a range of products at a Lower Shelf Price to provide customers with even more ways for their budget to go further for more sustained periods of time at Woolworths,” Harker said.
