Supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths are slashing prices of seafood and other Easter favourites as Aussies prepare to celebrate at home over the long weekend.

Both Coles and Woolworths have announced the return of their $22 rock lobsters in anticipation of increased demand over the Easter holidays.

Coles, for one, is expecting customers to splash out on more than 500,000 kilograms of seafood – a 200 per cent spike compared to any other week of the year. Top picks include cooked prawns - which covers half of the overall volume of seafood expected to be consumed during the long Easter weekend - along with 66,400kg of salmon, 90,000 lobsters, and 324,000 individual oysters.

Rival Woolworths also expects to see as many as 60,000 rock lobsters and 85 tonnes of fresh salmon fly off the shelves this Easter. The retailer also expects to sell 200 tonnes of cooked Aussie tiger prawns this Easter week, with 120 tonnes sold on Thursday and 30 tonnes sold on Easter Saturday alone.

"Value has never been more important at Woolworths, and we want to ensure our customers can enjoy fresh seafood at a competitive price this long weekend," Woolworths Commercial director for seafood Tim Dudding said in a statement.

Aussies to celebrate at home

Many Australians are expected to be holding intimate family celebrations to keep costs down amid increasing household-budget pressures, with 20 per cent more families hunting for Easter food specials than before, and 71 per cent looking at price as the most important factor when shopping for Easter products, according to Coles data.

Apart from seafood, Coles is also anticipating its biggest Easter yet for confectionary and hot cross buns, with more than six tonnes of Easter eggs and bunnies, and nearly 75 million hot cross buns expected to be sold this season.

Australia’s second-largest supermarket chain is also expecting 87 per cent of families to give chocolate eggs and bunnies this year, up 10 per cent from the same period last year, with 50 per cent of families looking to hold Easter egg hunts.

According to Coles executive general manager for fresh Andy Mossop, it's important to understand what customers are feeling to provide the best value and quality on products they need most this Easter.

"We started our specials on Easter confectionary and hot cross buns much earlier this year to help household budgets go further by planning ahead and grabbing instant savings on items customers are buying most," he said.

Aussies are expected to snap up more than 500,000kg of seafood, including the popular $22 rock lobsters at Coles and Woolworths.
