Childcare is costing Aussie parents more than private schools

It’s costing some Aussie parents more to send their children to childcare than it is to enrol them in some of the country’s most prestigious private schools.

The Australian Childcare Alliance NSW chief, Chiang Lim, told the Saturday Telegraph that some families in North Sydney are forced to pay $30,000 per year for part-time care, or a whopping $50,000 for five days a week.

Compare that with private school, The King’s School in Parramatta, which reportedly charges up to $36,000 per year in school fees, and Loreto Kirribilli’s fees range from $15,000 to $22,000 per year.

Lim told the Saturday Telegraph it was “absurd” that it could be more expensive to send your child to daycare than some of the elite private schools in Sydney.

“We really need a review of the entire system,” Lim said.

The average cost of childcare in Mosman was $159.56 per day, with at least one centre in the suburb charging $210.

In Coogee, daycare fees can be up to $150, while in Canterbury, you might be paying $115 per day.

If you want to send your child to community preschools, which cost up to $40 a day for six hours of care, you’ll have to battle long waiting lists, and cop higher fees at other preschools until you’re accepted.

Lim said this system meant parents were either working less, or finding alternatives to childcare.
