Chiefs won't name starting QB, but Patrick Mahomes is full practice participant

The Kansas City Chiefs aren’t going to rush Patrick Mahomes back, but he’s doing pretty well to shorten his timetable to return.

Mahomes seemed close to playing last week, and Andy Reid said the reigning MVP will do more in practice this week via Adam Teicher of ESPN.com. The Chiefs play at the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Reid wouldn’t commit to announcing who will start this week. If Mahomes can’t go, it’ll be Matt Moore again. But it seems that Mahomes has a good shot to play.

The Chiefs listed Mahomes as a full participant in practice on Wednesday, which is a good sign he’ll start Sunday.

Chiefs have played well with Matt Moore

Mahomes suffered a dislocated kneecap on a quarterback sneak against the Denver Broncos. That was Oct. 17. Thursday will be three weeks since the injury.

The Chiefs have done fine without Mahomes, going 1-1. The offense has continued to play well with Moore. But clearly the Chiefs are excited about getting Mahomes back.

Kansas City still looks like the clear favorite in the AFC West, and that’s unlikely to change no matter who is starting at quarterback. Once Mahomes gets back, the Chiefs can start getting momentum for a potential playoff run.

Patrick Mahomes making progress

The Chiefs have insisted they’ll be careful with Mahomes, and Reid has stuck to that. That’s a reason he hasn’t been specific about what the Chiefs want to see or when Mahomes will return to the lineup.

Mahomes participated in practice last week and seemed to be moving pretty well based on the little that was shared from Chiefs practice. Assuming Mahomes has another solid week of practice, he should have a good chance to play.

Whether it’s this week or not, it shouldn’t be too long before the NFL’s MVP returns.
