Aldi has been named the UK's cheapest supermarket in 2022, according to a new ranking by consumer group Which?

The German-owned discount supermarket was found to be the cheapest supermarket for seven out of the 12 months of 2022.

Throughout 2022, Which? compared how much the UK's biggest supermarkets charge for a trolley of groceries, including household essentials such as bread and toothpaste.

Which? compared hundreds of grocery prices at Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Ocado (OCDO.L), Sainsbury’s (SBRY.L), Tesco (TSCO.L) and Waitrose to reveal the cheapest supermarket each month.

German discount retailer Lidl came a close second.

Across the seven months that Aldi was awarded "cheapest supermarket of the month", the average difference was £1.59 compared to Lidl.

For the first five months of 2022 Lidl prices were actually cheaper than Aldi's.

However, by the end of the year Aldi had the most months clocked up with the lowest prices.

Waitrose was the most expensive supermarket in the UK for the same trolley of groceries.

Aldi was also the cheapest supermarket in December, which is one of the key months for retail spending.

A trolley of 48 popular groceries cost £81.63 at Aldi, beating rival discounter Lidl by £1.61.

The same 48 groceries cost £112.62 at Waitrose, making it nearly £31 more expensive than Aldi.

Tesco was the cheapest at £93.42 of the "big four" UK supermarkets — Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, and Morrisons — during December.

Which? also compared the cost of a larger trolley of 149 items at the traditional "big four" supermarkets. Asda was the cheapest, at £355.62 on average.

Asda was the cheapest "traditional" supermarket every month in 2022.

Sainsbury's was the next cheapest in Which's December analysis for 149 items, coming in at £368.97, followed by Tesco, at £375.97.

Waitrose was £51.33 more expensive than Asda, coming in at £406.95, on average, for the same trolley of goods.
