If you’ve got plans to get away for the long weekend, save your dollars by knowing where to get the best deal on your petrol.

Comparison website comparethemarket.com.au is advising motorists around Australia to shop around for the cheapest fuel, particularly if you’re in Sydney or Brisbane where prices are expected to rise in the lead-up to the long weekend.

Residents in the ACT, NSW, SA and Queensland will get a long weekend on Monday 7 October to celebrate either Labour day or the Queen’s birthday.

“Even if your state won’t enjoy the extra day break, we advise motorists to shop around in their area, and even beyond, to find the most competitive deals before filling up,” said comparethemarket.com.au finance and savings expert Rod Attrill.

Meanwhile, petrol prices in Melbourne and Adelaide are already easing, while Perth’s petrol prices are peaking today (Tuesday).

Overall, Adelaidians pay the most for petrol in the country, forking out 144.8 cents per litre, while Sydney motorists actually pay the least for fuel at 139.4 cents per litre.

Here’s where to find the cheapest petrol in every Australian capital city:

Sydney

Cheapest: Blacktown area, Sydney’s west (average 135.8cpl); Fairfield Heights (130.9 cpl as of Sunday night)

Most expensive: Eastern suburbs (average 146.7 cpl)

“It’s expected that Sydney fuel prices should continue to rise into the Labour Day long weekend – as part of its normal price cycle – so motorists should shop around for the cheapest deal at the bowser.”

Melbourne

Cheapest: Brunswick East (average 141.2 cpl), Footscray (average 139 cpl)

Most expensive: Greensborough/Ivanhoe region (average 146 cpl), Melton (average 167.9 cpl)

“With Melbourne fuel prices peaking last Tuesday, motorists can expect prices to continue to fall in the short term. As such, it’s suggested that people top up, rather than fill up if possible, until prices ease further.”

Brisbane

Cheapest: West Brisbane region (average 139.5 cpl); Richlands (average 133.9 cpl)

Most expensive: Far South Brisbane (144 cpl)

“Motorists are being advised to shop around to find the cheapest deal before filling up, as prices are continuing to rise into the long weekend.”

Adelaide

Cheapest: Western and Beach suburbs (average 143.1 cpl)

Most expensive: Eastern suburbs (average 147.1 cpl)

“Adelaide motorists may have seen prices at the bowser peak last week, but now they are starting to ease off. It’s good news for drivers hitting the road this long weekend, as prices should continue to fall.”

Perth

Cheapest: East region (average 139.3 cpl); Bassendean (134.8 cpl as of Sunday night)

Most expensive: North region (140.5 cpl)

Canberra

Cheapest: Fyshwick (average 147.9 cpl)

“Motorists in the capital have been paying an average of 142.7cpl at the pump – this sits just above the national fuel price average for the September quarter. As of early this week, the average price for unleaded fuel has been about 148.9cpl, with prices ranging from 138.7-149.9cpl.”

“In the lead up to the long weekend, motorists may need to venture further to find a better deal at the pump.”
