Centrelink warns of upcoming payment changes: ‘We want to help you plan’

Centrelink offices will be closed over the Easter long weekend.

Centrelink recipients are being warned to be aware of closures and payment changes over the upcoming Easter public holidays.

Services Australia has advised that Centrelink service centres and most call centres will be closed on Good Friday (March 29, 2024) and Easter Monday (April 1, 2024) and this may impact payment and reporting dates.

“We want to help you plan so you still get paid. You may need to report your income early so we can pay you during these closures. We may pay you early,” Services Australia said.

These changes will impact a number of Centrelink recipients, including those on JobSeeker, Youth Allowance and Austudy, as well as the age pension, carer allowance, disability support pension and parenting payment.

Around 5 million Centrelink recipients will have seen their payments increase this week, as part of the government’s twice-yearly indexation.

Do I have to report early to Centrelink?

The Easter public holidays mean your reporting and payment dates may change and you’ll need to report early.

Your Centrelink online account will show you your new reporting date for the Easter period. You can also look at the Services Australia website to check the changes.

If you report early, Services Australia said you’d need to include what you expected to be paid for the full reporting period.

You can still report your income online even when Centrelink is closed, but if you do it on a public holiday you will be paid after the holiday.

What if I don’t have to report?

If you don’t have to report to get your Centrelink payment, you may be paid early. This is your normal payment, just paid early.

“We won’t delay payments because of a public holiday, but we may pay you earlier than normal,” Services Australia said.

This will be done as close to and before your normal payment day.
