Centrelink tax return warning for recipients: ‘Might need to amend’

Centrelink said it will alert recipients who are impacted by the changes.

Centrelink recipients have been warned they may need to amend their tax returns even if they have already lodged them. Taxpayers have been able to lodge their tax returns since July 1 for the 2023-24 financial year.

A Centrelink payment summary shows the taxable and non-taxable payments that recipients received from Services Australia within the tax year that the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) needs to know about.

Services Australia has told people to be aware their summary information can sometimes change and this can have flow-on effects for their tax returns. For example, the information could change if Centrelink adjusts a payment after you’ve received it.

“If you get a letter from us, you might need to amend your tax return if you’ve already lodged it,” Services Australia said.

The letter will tell you what payment summary detail changed and the tax year it is for.

If you get your Centrelink letters online, they will be sent to your myGov Inbox. If you don’t, a letter will be posted to you.

If you have already lodged your tax return and you get a letter, you’ll need to amend it.

“Check the new pre-filled information in ATO myTax matches the change in the letter from us,” Services Australia said.

If it matches, you can re-submit your return. If it doesn’t match, you can either change it yourself to match the letter and re-submit or contact the ATO through its website.

If you haven’t done your tax return yet and you get a letter, make sure the pre-fill details in ATO myTax match the letter. Again, you can change them if they don’t match or contact the ATO.

Services Australia has recommended people wait until late July to lodge their tax returns. That way their payment summary details will pre-fill in myTax.
