Woman shares horrific warning after pet cat shot

A woman from Canberra has posted a warning on Facebook after her beloved pet cat was shot, resulting in thousands of dollars worth of vet bills and an amputated leg.

Last Friday evening Maddi Holz and her husband found their three-year-old cat Richmond hiding by the side of her house in Lanyon, covered in blood.

“When my husband picked him up he was limp,” Ms Holz told Yahoo News Australia.

When Ms Holz rushed Richmond to the vet they couldn’t believe it when they were told he had been shot.

“He was shot in his front left leg, shattering his elbow and damaging a major vessel,” Ms Holz said.

”I’m lucky I found him before he bled out”.

Richmond has since had his leg amputated and some shrapnel still remains, which the vet expects will need to be removed at a later date.

“He isn't quite himself, but he definitely seems happy and relaxed to be home,” Ms Holz said.

The couple have so far spent $2500 on Richmond's vet bills and are still unsure if they will let him outside again after he heals.

“I make this post to warn the owners of animals around this area, I would hate for this to happen to your fur-babies,” Ms Holz wrote on a Canberra Facebook group.

“I also make this post to call out to anyone who may have heard something or potentially knows of anything. My cat isn't just an animal, he is apart of my family and is extremely loved. The police have been informed and will be provided with the shrapnel from his leg. Please think before you injure someone's pet,” she continued.

Ms Holz said she has been overwhelmed with people offering to help pay for Richmond's vet bills and instead has asked for donations to Pet Medical Crisis that provides assistance to pensioners and disadvantaged pet owners.
