Victorians can claim the state’s solar rebate a second time, with more efficient systems helping reduce energy bills as prices soar.

A $1,400 rebate for solar panels and the $1,000 solar hot water rebate will be able to be claimed twice when Victorians move.

The government said the use of solar panels could slash $1,200 off their annual energy bill, while approved heat pumps and hot water systems could save up to $400 a year.

The rebate can also be claimed if Victorians are replacing panels more than 10 years old.

"We're always looking for ways to improve the program, to make it flexible, to meet the changing circumstances of Victorian households,” Energy Minister Lily D'Ambrosio said.

"We expect more Victorians to come forward now and apply for the rebates and enjoy the benefits."

The average wholesale price of energy in Victoria has jumped from $51 to $114 since 2021, according to the Australian Energy Regulator.

Energy bills were found to be in the top three most stressful expenses for millions of Aussies, according to an analysis by Finder.

Who is eligible for solar rebates?

In August, the Victorian government increased the household income threshold to access the Solar Homes Program from $180,000 per year to $210,000 per year.

“Families can also access an $8,800 interest-free loan for a household battery system – in some cases this will reduce the upfront installation costs to zero,” Solar Victoria said.

“Homes with both solar and a battery save around $1,500 on their energy bills each year.”

More than 260,000 Victorian households have cut their energy bills by switching to solar, batteries and energy-efficient hot water.

About 61 per cent of the rebates are going to households with less than $100,000 combined income.
