Camilla presents 2021 Oldie of the Year winners to stars including Sir Geoff Hurst and Dame Delia Smith

Footballing legend Sir Geoff Hurst, actress Leslie Caron and cook Dame Delia Smith are among the 2021 Oldie of the Year winners.

The annual ceremony, which took part at the Savoy on Tuesday, was held to celebrate the achievements of the older generation.

The awards were presented by the Duchess of Cornwall. However, she was not joined by the Queen who, according to organisers: “Politely but firmly declined to be honoured by judges, stating ‘You are only as old as you feel.’”

The principal Oldie of the Year award when to actress and dancer Leslie Caron, 90, the double Academy Award-winner and star of Gigi and An American in Paris.

Sir Geoff Hurst, 79, the only footballer to have scored a hat-trick in a World Cup final, was awarded the Oldie Golden Boot of the Year, 55 years on from England’s 1966 victory.

Dame Delia Smith, 80, took home Truly Scrumptious Oldie of the Year to mark her 50-year culinary career under her belt.

Meanwhile, Dr Mridul Kumar Datta, 81, and Dr Saroj Datta, 81, were awarded joint Oldie NHS Angels of the Year.

The married couple have worked together in their Blackburn GP practice notching up some 110 years of service for the NHS.

During Covid, they continued to work full time.

Poptastic Oldie of the Year went to Whispering Bob Harris, 75. Harris is best known as the figurehead of The Old Grey Whistle Test in the 1970s and he is the co-founder of listings magazine Time Out.

Roger McGough received Oldie People’s Poet of the Year, 83, while Margaret Seaman, 92, was crowned Oldie Champion Knitter of the Year for her 18-foot-long knitted model of Sandringham is currently on display at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate.

Barry Humphries’ fictional character Sir Les Patterson, 79, was awarded the Wizard from Oz Oldie of the Year.

Notable guests to this year’s ceremony included 2020’s winners Lady Glenconner, 89, the best-selling memoirist, Colin Thackery, 91-year-old winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2019 and Chelsea Pensioner; William Roache, 89, Coronation Street star and Roger Law, 80, ceramicist and puppeteer, co-creator of Spitting Image.

This year’s winners were chosen by a committee of judges including co-host Gyles Brandreth, the broadcaster, actress Dame Maureen Lipman, journalists Mak Ellen and Rachel Johnson, satirist Craig Brown, writer Harry Mount and publisher James Pembroke.
