Cairns residents quizzed about FIFO potential

A national industry skills group is surveying residents around Cairns in far north Queensland to measure how qualified they would be to join the fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) mining workforce.

SkillsDMC says people living within 90 minutes of the Cairns airport could be ideal candidates for jobs at planned mines in northern and Western Australia.

Cairns-based FIFO coordinator Jeremy Blockey says he hopes the online survey provides data to convince resource companies to look to the far north for workers.

"This exercise is about being able to demonstrate the depth and breadth of skills that we've got and the aspirations of the job-seeker market to try and get some of that work," he said.
