Your bedroom should feel like a cozy sanctuary where you can fully relax. If you want to take your bedroom’s coziness to the next level, Shelby Roebock (@prettyinthepines) can show you how! Host Melanie Sutrathada (@melaniesutra) sits down with Shelby, whose blog Pretty in the Pines is packed with useful home decorating tips and tricks, to find out how to decorate your bedroom without breaking the bank.

Shelby explains that when it comes to furnishing and decorating your bedroom, it’s all about cultivating an atmosphere of calmness. “Having a cozy bedroom is so important because, especially if you work from home as well, you want to feel calm and have that sense of peace,” Shelby tells Melanie. “Having a cozy sanctuary where you can go at the end of the day is just crucial to your mental health and your productivity and just your wellbeing.”

One of the most effective ways to imbue your bedroom with a sense of calm is through soft, warm lighting, according to Shelby. “It makes such an impact on how calm you feel,” Shelby explains. “It doesn’t have to be overhead lighting. Actually, it’s better if you have small clusters of warm lights.”

Shelby recommends decorating your bedroom with a portable table lamp and some flameless candles. “These days there are so many portable lamps that you can recharge,” Shelby says, noting that this is perfect if you’re short on outlets. “Personally, I put a little tiny lamp in a windowsill in my room and also use flickering, flameless candles, which completely change your space.”

Another way to make your bedroom feel more like home is to keep it tidy. Shelby recommends the CATCH:3 charger tray by Courant, which provides a space to keep your small items organized, while also charging your phone. “It makes such a difference in how clean your bedroom feels, and overall making you feel calmer and cozier,” Shelby explains.

Once your bedroom is warmly lit and perfectly tidy, it’s time to think about cozy quilts! Quilts don’t just keep you warm and cozy while you sleep at night, they’re also a great way to add to the aesthetic of your space. “My final suggestion for creating a bedroom is bringing in texture through fabric,” Shelby says. “Adding texture to your bedroom through functional decorating makes a very big difference.”

With those useful tips in mind, it’s time to go forth and get cozy!
