Budget 2014: Granny who attacked Abbott on TV 'a Labor supporter'

Budget 2014: Granny who attacked Abbott on TV 'a Labor supporter'

The elderly woman who shot into limelight this morning after launching an astonishing attack on Prime Minister Tony Abbott on TV show has been revealed as a Labor supporter.

Vilma Ward put Mr Abbott in the line of fire on Ten network's Wake Up Show by asking him some tough questions and vehemently opposing changes that will penalise 3.7 million pensioners from 2017.

News Ltd has now reported that Mrs Ward is not just anther pensioner from Queensland. She is, in fact, Labor’s "go-to granny" for media events and one of the most prominent members of the Kevin Rudd fan club.

While on the show, Mrs Ward blasted the Prime Minister for tough cuts in Tuesday night's Budget. ''I have never heard such rubbish in all my life,” Mrs Ward told the PM.

‘‘Why don't you leave the pensioners alone? If we pull the belt any tighter we’re going to choke to death,’’ Mrs Ward said. ''Why are you picking on me?

The astonishing attack took the Prime Minister by surprise. “Fair enough, that’s your right in a democracy, to be able to tell the prime minister exactly what you think of him,’’ he said.

He also mentioned that it was obvious that Mrs Ward had not voted for the Coalition - a comment that did not go down well with the pensioner. ''Excuse me, it's got nothing to do with who I vote for and who I don't vote for. Why are you picking on pensioners?”

Budget report card: It's a Black Adder budget!

At one point in the conversation, My Abbott tried to give Mrs Ward the “fair budget” line, saying, “everyone is doing his or her bit, including, dare I say, politicians.’’

However, this was met with an indignant “You’re a comedian, sir, you’re a comedian”.

Abbott on the defensive

Mr Abbott defended his government's unpopular first budget, saying it's "fundamentally honest" and the right thing for the nation.

Beginning his post-budget media blitz this morning, the Prime Minister conceded voters won't like a lot of the measures.

“All the savings from health go into health research, and as for education, over the forward estimates, our spending on schools is maintained," Abbott told Sunrise.

"We are not going to cook the books, we are not going to make a series of rosy assumptions," he said, "The government cannot keep using its credit card to pay the nation's mortgage."

The budget includes a $7 charge for GP visits, lower pension rises and hikes in the fuel excise and income tax for people earning over $180,000.

It also includes cuts to family benefits, foreign aid and the ABC.

“You can’t plan constantly on best case scenarios, you’ve got to plan on much more conservative scenarios. We are not going to cook the books, we are not going to make a series of rosy assumptions the way the Labor government did, " the Prime Minister told Sunrise.
