Brooks Brothers' glitch overcharges shoppers

Adam Jeffery | CNBC. Brooks Brothers said a malicious software could have affected users' name, payment card account number, card expiration date or card verification code.

A glitch on Brooks Brothers' website caused a number of holiday shoppers to get overcharged on what was supposed to be its lowest prices of the year.

The men's specialty store was touting a deal on its website through which shoppers could get four shirts for $199. But when customers handed over their credit card information, the price was not adjusted to account for the sale.

Shoppers took to the retailer's Twitter account asking it to correct the error.

A spokeswoman for Brooks Brothers did not immediately respond to a request for comment, though the company replied to complaints on Twitter saying it had fixed the error. The retailer was also adjusting the prices on existing orders.

However, as of 2:45 p.m. Friday, affected shoppers hadn't yet received an e-mail acknowledging the error.

The wait time on Brooks Brothers' customer service line was more than 10 minutes Friday afternoon.
