Boris Johnson sends his best wishes to the Queen after hospital stay

Boris Johnson has sent his best wishes to the Queen after it emerged she spent the night in hospital.

A spokesman for Buckingham Palace confirmed the monarch had been forced to cancel a planned visit to Northern Ireland for “preliminary investigations” on Wednesday.

The 95-year-old was treated at the private King Edward VII Hospital in central London, but has now returned to her desk at Windsor Castle.

Speaking to reporters on a visit to a vaccine centre at the Little Venice Sports Centre in west London, the prime minister said: “I think everybody sends Her Majesty our very, very best wishes.

“And certainly we have from the Government. But I’m given to understand that actually Her Majesty is characteristically back at her desk at Windsor as we speak.

“But we send her every possible good wish.”

Sources said there was no alarm about the Queen’s condition and she still intends to host world leaders at the Cop26 climate summit in Glasgow. The Prince of Wales and Prince William will also be in attendance.

Her condition had not initially been revealed officially to the media, though her aides decided to issue a “media advisory” statement just after 10pm after the Sun newspaper learned of her stay.

A spokesman for the prime minister declined to say whether he had had his weekly audience with the monarch. However, it has so far not been listed in the Court Circular, the official record of royal engagements.

It marks the Queen’s first overnight stay in hospital since 2013, when she spent a night at a private clinic while being treated for symptoms of gastroenteritis.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said late on Thursday night: “Following medical advice to rest for a few days, the Queen attended hospital on Wednesday afternoon for some preliminary investigations, returning to Windsor Castle at lunchtime today, and remains in good spirits.”
