Thanks to increased awareness, more and more people are using sunscreen on a regular basis. However, if you’re of a deeper complexion, then you know caste-free sunscreens are a fairly recent advancement. Black Girl Sunscreen is just one of the pioneering brands working to deliver sun protection — without a white or purple caste — one bottle at a time.
The brand has been around since 2016. However, Black Girl Sunscreen started after some friends of founder Shontay Lundy told her to start protecting her skin while hiking.
“I would be reluctant because of my complexion, it left a white residue,” Lundy tells In The Know. “I wasn’t really sure of who I was in 2015 and 2016 because being a dark-skinned woman wasn’t kind of, like, cool.”
The Myths Surrounding Dark Skin And Sunscreen
“So the myth is Black doesn’t crack, Black doesn’t get sunburned,” Lundy explains. “It goes super deep in terms of why people aren’t wearing sunscreen. Dermatologists aren’t talking about it, and then we already have this pre-notation that we don’t need it.”
