The fast food industry rakes in $20.1 billion annually from hungry Australians each year, according to IBISWorld.

It's no wonder the big-name restaurants are constantly discounting to get themselves a slice of that massive pie.

That's good news for Yahoo Finance readers, who should never, ever pay menu price for a quick meal.

Here are our favourite deals this week from KFC, McDonald's and Hungry Jack's, to help you decide where to go.

McDonald's: best discounts

Usually the best deals are found in the MyMaccas smartphone app – but that's not the case this week. At the time of writing, there were exactly zero discounts showing there.

It must be because McDonald's is trying to channel customers to its current Mini Games promotion. By playing a series of games within the app, you can score the following free food items:

  • Regular sundae

  • Small fries

  • McCafé small coffee

  • Big Mac burger

  • McChicken burger

  • Hash brown

  • Cheeseburger

  • McFlurry

  • Large shake

  • Quarter Pounder burger

  • 10 Chicken McNuggets

  • 6 Chicken McNuggets

  • Filet-O-Fish burger

  • Small 10-piece chicken McNugget meal

  • Small Big Mac meal and a Cheeseburger

KFC: best discounts

The KFC Australia app is the most reliable source of discounts.

The New Products page shows the current temporary deals:

  • $2 slider (aioli, supercharged, pepper mayo or BBQ)

  • 24 nuggets for $10

  • Streetwise Feast (6 pieces original recipe, 6 nuggets, 3 tenders, 2 large chips, 2 dipping sauces): $21.95

The Colonel's Offers section in the app offers the best value:

  • $1 regular chips

  • Cheap as Chips (8 pieces original recipe, 6 nuggets, 2 large chips, 2 large potato & gravy, 2 dipping sauces): $20.95

  • Burger Combo Deluxe (Zinger or Original Fillet burger, chips, drink, potato & gravy): $7.45

  • Double Combo (2 Zinger or Original Fillet burgers, 2 chips, 2 drinks): $14.45

  • Family burger deal (4 Zinger or Original Fillet burgers, two large chips, 1.25L drink): $21.95

Hungry Jack's: best discounts

Paper coupons are the popular method of getting a discount from Hungry Jack's.

But the restaurant is not as generous as ite rivals – individual franchises will vary wildly in their acceptance of the vouchers.

Some outlets will outright reject any coupons. Some will want to see the original paper leaflet before giving the discount. Others will allow customers to show their voucher on their smartphone.

It's a punt, but if you want to give it a go here are the deals:
