There is a lot of money in the quick-service food industry in Australia, and all the big restaurants want a piece of the action.
Australians collectively spend $20.1 billion per year, in fact, on fast food.
The competition for your wallet is fierce and all the chains will offer money-saving deals – not just occasionally, but all the time.
And that's why Yahoo Finance readers should never, ever pay menu price for a quick bite.
Here are the best current deals from McDonald's, KFC and Hungry Jack's, so you can compare before grabbing lunch or dinner:
McDonald's: best discounts
The MyMaccas smartphone app is a reliable source for cheap burgers.
The weekly deals currently showing in the My Rewards section include:
$3 McCafé medium coffee
$3 Quarter Pounder or Big Mac
The reduced price for this will appear only when you select "small" through the normal menu in the app:
Double Beef 'n' Bacon small meal: $5.95
KFC: best discounts
Similarly the mobile app is the most reliable place to find KFC deals.
The New Products section is currently listing these two offers, but they're both due to end within the next few days:
Zinger popcorn box (Zinger, original tender, regular popcorn chicken, chips, postato & gravy, drink): $12.95
Fill-up box (Original recipe piece, original tender, chips, potato & gravy, dinner roll): $4.95 until 4pm
But the Colonel's Offers page shows the best value combinations:
Burger Combo Deluxe (Zinger or Original Fillet burger, chips, drink, potato & gravy): $7.45
Double Combo (2 Zinger or Original Fillet burgers, 2 chips, 2 drinks): $12.95
Family burger deal (4 Zinger or Original Fillet burgers, two large chips, 1.25L drink): $20.95
Dinner box (6 breast fillets, 2 large chips): $20.95
Cheap as Chips (8 pieces original recipe, 6 nuggets, 2 large chips, 2 large potato & gravy, 2 dipping sauces): $20.95
Hungry Jack's: best discounts
Unlike its rivals, paper coupons are the best bet for Hungry Jack's cheap eats. The current set of vouchers expires January 20.
One warning for consumers is that individual Hungry Jack's franchises are notoriously inconsistent in recognising the vouchers.
Some restaurants outright reject the coupons, some will accept a graphic showing on a mobile device, and other outlets will only accept printed paper. A minority even insist on the original paper voucher – as printed by Hungry Jack's.
