Best and worst dishwashing liquids revealed - and the winner costs just $1.79

CHOICE reviewed 50 dishwashing liquids from Aldi, Coles, Woolworths and more.

Washing the dishes is a chore you can’t avoid so it’s worth making sure your dishwashing liquid is actually making the cleaning process easier on you and your wallet.

CHOICE tested 50 different dishwashing liquids from Aldi, Coles, Woolworths, Morning Fresh, Earth Choice, Fairy and more to help Aussies find the best option - and the ones to avoid.

The consumer group found you didn’t have to spend a fortune to get sparkling plates, with two home-brand detergents topping the list and beating out products that were more than six times the price.

Best dishwashing liquid

The top-scoring dishwashing liquid was from Aldi, with the German supermarket’s Tandil Ultra Power Soak and Tandil Ultra Quick Dry scoring 90 per cent. The Tandil Ultra Odour Neutralising liquid was the next best product, scoring 85 per cent.

CHOICE director of reviews and testing Matthew Steen said Aldi “wiped the floors with its competitors” this year, both in terms of performance and price.

“Aldi’s dishwashing liquids are also great bargains at the checkout at just 40 cents per 100ml," Steen said. “That's around a quarter of the price of other top-scoring detergents from well-known brands such as Morning Fresh and Palmolive.

Worst dishwashing liquid

Five products tied for the worst-performing dishwashing liquid, CHOICE found. These came from Fairy, Earth Choice, Coles and Aldi.

“A number of well-known brands, including Aldi, had products towards both the top and bottom of the leaderboard,” Steen said. “This goes to show that you should never assume that if one product cleans well, similar ones from the same brand will deliver the same results.”

CHOICE also called out the Saba Organic Dishwashing Liquid, which scored 65 per cent, as being an expensive detergent that was “a waste of your money” at $8.50 for a 500mL bottle.
