Australia Post deadline: Final day for parcels to be sent in time - but there is one loophole if you're running late

The deadlines to send Christmas presents to loved ones start today.

Australians sending their friends and loved ones presents through the mail need to get them wrapped and posted ASAP as the Australia Post deadline for them to arrive before Christmas is today.

You have until 5pm to get your parcel in the mail if you're sending it via normal delivery services and want them to arrive in time, with Australia Post extending delivery days to include weekends ahead of Christmas. If you simply won't make it before today's deadline, there is another option to avoid being labelled a 'Grinch'.

You will need to fork out extra to send via Express Post, but be warned, that deadline is also fast approaching. If you're on the other end of the delivery, and worry you won't be able to collect during post office hours, Australia Post currently has free 24/7 collection through its Parcel Lockers.

Find out all the domestic and international delivery deadlines below.

What are the Australia Post cut-off dates?

Australia Post parcels should be sent by Monday, December 18 for standard post to most destinations within Australia. If sending via Express Post, the cut-off date is Thursday, December 21.

The deadline for people sending to or from Western Australia passed on December 15, however, you still have until December 20 for Express Post.

Residents in the Northern Territory have also missed the cut-off date for standard post, but have until December 20 for Express Post.

What about international parcels?

If you are sending presents internationally, the cut-off dates have now passed.

For New Zealand, the deadline for standard shipping was December 7 and express shipping for December 13.

For the UK, the deadline was December 5 for standard shipping and December 12 for express shipping.

For parcels to the USA, the cut-off was December 6 for standard post and December 13 for express.

For Canada, it was December 4 for standard shipping and December 11 for express shipping.

The standard and express shipping deadlines have now passed for parcels being sent to China and most of Asia, as well as major European destinations.

What are the FedEx cut-off dates?

Today is also the last day to send FedEx parcels for Road Express shipments in Australia. However, residents of Western Australia and the Northern Territory needed to get in a bit earlier, with December 15 the last day for shipping.

If sending via the priority service, including overnight express service, the deadline is December 20.

The final deadline to collect shipments from a local FedEx facility is December 22.

What about international parcels?

For parcels being sent to New Zealand, the deadline for economy services, including International Economy and International Economy Freight is today December 18.
