It’s official: the best micro, small, medium and large workplaces across the whole country have been unveiled.

The 2021 Great Places to Work annual survey revealed network solutions provider Cisco Systems Australia has held onto its top spot as Australia’s best large workplace (over 1,000 workers) for the second year in a row, while information tech firm Mantel Group has nabbed the title as Australia’s best medium-sized workplace (100-999 workers).

Australia’s best small employer (30-99 employees) is accessories brand Bellroy, and Australia’s best micro workplace (10-29 employees) is Sydney-based The Recruitment Company.

According to Great Place to Work Australia general manager Samantha Huddle, the top employers were defined by three things.

“The definition of a great workplace is one where employees trust the people they work for, have pride in what they do and enjoy the people they work with,” said Huddle.

The best performing employers understood the need to care for their staff during the pandemic, she added.

“Organisations that understand what it means to genuinely look after their employees amid a culture of togetherness and cooperation – and can live those ideals whether people are in the office or on the end of a video call – survived and even thrived during the COVID-19 crisis.”

Cisco Australia vice president Ben Dawson said the company’s aim in the pandemic was to take care of workers, adapt its businesses and support communities.

“We responded to the needs of our employees – with their safety, health, financial stability, and mental wellbeing as our priority,” Dawson said.

“We adapted our business and extended the support of our technology solutions to our customers and in our communities, empowering our employees to engage, be effective and drive impact.”

Meanwhile, The Recruitment Company CEO Geoff Millar said creating a great place to work wasn’t just about ‘the stuff’ – “although we have our benefits package, the bar, the pool table, the karaoke machine,” Millar said.

“It’s about building company-based clarity, trust, and shared accountability. Admittedly the stuff does help a bit too.”

An employee said The Recruitment Company offered “awesome work flexibility”, and that they had “not worked before at a company where the culture is so great”.

Mantel Group is a consulting business, made up of seven brands. CEO Con Mouzouris said putting its 305 people first was the company’s “biggest priority”.

“From the foundation of the group we knew we had to approach things differently to what we’d experienced in other organisations,” said Mouzouris.

The company’s goal is to ensure every individual has a chance to lead and everyone’s voice is heard, he added.

“Finding top talent is critical to our success, so this recognition is positive reinforcement that we have created an environment where this talent can strive, whilst also attracting like minded individuals who can connect and help deliver the best outcomes for our clients.”

Bellroy chief Andy Fallshaw said the company’s mission was to use business as a force for good.

“But the way to achieve this mission is by actioning it in reverse – firstly helping our crew, and the world, flourish,” Fallshaw said.

“When our people are energised and developing, and when our culture is challenging yet nurturing, it's our crew that create positive change that flows outward.”

Verizon Media, parent company of Yahoo Finance, is the only media organisation to be named as a Great Place To Work. Managing director Paul Sigaloff said he believes the company's secret ingredient is "having a clear purpose".

"For us at Verizon Media, we’re committed to connecting people to their passions in order to move the world forward. This is the big 'why' behind everything we do," he said.

The organisation aims to leverage content, technology, innovation and people to make the world a better place, Sigaloff added.

"A great place to work is somewhere where people can be curious, reach their full potential, are treated as equals and the environment encourages people to have a positive impact on our community, society and the world.

"And when our people are empowered, supported and inspired that's when we see the most success."
