Rideshare users across the country could be in for price surges of as much as 140 per cent next month.

Aussies could see an average trip of $30 leap to as much as $72 - a $42 difference - with demand anticipated to be higher than last year as Aussies look to celebrate in the wake of eased COVID restrictions.

On a typical day, Sydney saw the highest average spend per 5-10km trip of $33.61. Adelaide was the cheapest, coming in at $21.68.

Brisbane ($28.11) was the second highest, followed by Melbourne ($27.88) and Perth ($24.56).

According to rideshare-comparison app Placie, the pricing could see Australians face a steep increase, based on recent surge-pricing data for major events and festivities.

Placie head of growth Candace Ngok said last year, the app experienced average demand increases of up to 35 per cent and average price surges of more than 25 per cent for the Christmas period in 2021.

“The Christmas car crunch is set to be even greater this year, as people return to gatherings and celebrations after years of lockdowns and bad weather,” Ngok said.

Based on last year’s data, the biggest surges are set to be between 4:00pm and 8:00pm on Saturdays and 12:00am to 4:00am on Sundays during the first three weeks of December, as the Christmas-party season hits its height.

People in WA and NSW were observed to have the largest average increases in price over the festive period, with surges of up to 40 per cent and 20 per cent respectively.

Ex-rideshare driver, Placie partner and Australian Idol Casey Donovan said Christmas was a time to celebrate with friends and family, but it didn’t need to break the bank.

“After a challenging year for Aussie bank balances, the last thing anyone wants is to be hit with unexpected costs when getting a ride to buy presents, go to parties, or get to gatherings,” Donovan said.

“It’s always best to look for a bargain, even with ride services.”
