Aussies can slash their petrol bills with this new app

Aussies can slash their petrol bills with this new app

A new free app helps Aussies slash their petrol bills and could also mark the end of petrol price gouging across the country.

Since the app went live on Friday, four major petrol retailers have made their fuel prices available to the public, in real time, allowing drivers to check for the cheapest petrol in their area and be confident they’re getting the best deal with accurate prices streamed live on a new free app: Motormouth.

“We are hoping consumers use this information so it can not only help them immediately but overall drive the markets,” ACCC chairman Rod Sims said.

The move follows a landmark legal win by consumer watchdog ACCC.

Until now petrol retailers only shared prices with each other, effectively keeping it a secret from motorists.

“That allowed them to signal their behaviours in anticompetitive ways,” Sims said.

RACV general manager public policy Brian Negus said that information available on the new app “is going to put pressure on the service stations to make sure they are accurate with their pricing and that they reflect a reasonable price to the community”.

With recent profit margins at record highs, it is also hoped this will stop unfair price hikes and encourage more competition among petrol retailers.
