Aussie state giving away $6,000 to EV drivers in massive cash boost
Cash rebates, free registration and stamp duty concessions are some of the perks on offer for EV buyers.
Electric vehicles (EVs) are skyrocketing in popularity in Australia. New brands, like China’s BYD, have been pushing down prices for consumers, while states are also offering financial incentives for people to make the switch.
Some states like Queensland are offering rebates of up to $6,000 for EV buyers. Other states like New South Wales and Victoria have seen their rebates come to an end.
Here is a state-by-state breakdown of the big EV rebates and incentives offered in Australia.

Federal EV incentives
The luxury car tax (LCT) applies to expensive vehicles imported into Australia.
For the 2024-25 financial year it applies to cars that are worth more than $80,567. But there is a higher threshold for fuel-efficient cars, including EVs, which is currently set at $91,387.
The Electric Car Discount provides an exemption from fringe benefits tax for eligible EVs made available for employees by employers.
There is also generally no customs duty for EVs and plug-in hybrids with a value lower than the LCT threshold.
Queensland
Queensland EV buyers can get a generous rebate of up to $6,000 if they purchase a new eligible EV worth up to $68,000.
Residents must also have an annual household taxable income of under $180,000 to get the full $6,000 rebate. Households earning more than this can claim a lower $3,000 rebate.
Businesses may also be eligible for a $3,000 rebate.
New South Wales
NSW previously offered a $3,000 rebate but this ended on January 1, 2024.
Victoria
Victorian EV buyers can get $100 off their registration every year.
The state no longer offers its $3,000 rebate.
South Australia
SA ended its EV rebate program on January 1, 2024.
It still offers a three-year registration exemption for new EVs valued below $68,750, and first registered between October 28, 2021 and June 30, 2025.
Western Australia
WA EV buyers can get a $3,500 rebate if they purchase a new eligible EV worth $70,000 or less. This scheme is expected to last until May 10, 2025.
Tasmania
Tasmania EV buyers can get a $2,000 rebate however there are only a limited number of rebates still available.
Northern Territory
The NT offers free registration for eligible plug-in EVs until June 30, 2027.
Owners can also get a stamp duty concession of up to $1,500 for vehicles valued up to $50,000.
Australian Capital Territory
The ACT has transitioned from a weight-based to an emissions-based vehicle registration system.
This means EVs benefit from lower registration fees.
EVs are also eligible for a stamp duty exemption.
