Yahoo Finance Aussie parents get $250 ‘thank you’ vouchers
NSW parents who home-schooled their children during long lockdowns are now eligible for $250 for a government subsidised getaway.
One person from every eligible household will receive five $50 vouchers that can be used on accommodation or entertainment around the state until October.
The Parents vouchers work similarly to Dine and Discover vouchers and are available in the ServiceNSW app and service centres.
They'll be joined by Stay NSW vouchers later this month, which will give everyone over 18 a $50 voucher to spend with approved accommodation providers.
"These vouchers are a double win: they encourage families to get out and enjoy the best of our state while also providing much needed income to businesses affected by the pandemic," Premier Dominic Perrottet said on Sunday.
The Parents vouchers are "about thanking parents for their homeschooling efforts last year, helping make ends meet and supporting local businesses".
The $50 vouchers can be combined up to $250 and can also be pooled with friends and family who are booking accommodation together.
Bookings made through third-party websites and travel agencies will not be eligible, but customers can search for approved accommodation providers.
The vouchers were announced in October last year as part of a $2.8 billion economic package designed to stimulate the lockdown-hit economy.
“One of the biggest challenges for so many families during lockdowns was learning from home, and now, as life returns to normal, we want to encourage people to get out and boost economic activity,” Perrottet said when he made the announcement.
“In many senses, this is a ‘thank you’ that will go some small way towards helping family finances that took a big hit and at the same time supporting businesses and jobs.”
NSW adults are able to claim up to $150 in Dine and Discover vouchers, after the state government distributed two extra $25 vouchers to residents in a bid to revive the economy last year.
It means that two-parent households with children in NSW are now eligible for $450 in vouchers to spend on accommodation, dining and leisure activities.
