JobKeeper: ATO warns employers to 'take steps now' to avoid missing out

Employers have been told to “take steps now” to ensure they receive the JobKeeper payment, in a reminder from the Australian Tax Office.

“We know this payment is vital for the community, and we want every eligible employer to be ready to receive the JobKeeper Payments to help keep Australians in jobs,” ATO deputy commissioner James O’Halloran said on Thursday.

“At this stage employers should focus on determining their and their employees’ eligibility and desire to participate, and should discuss ongoing work arrangements with their employees.”

What do employers need to do to receive the JobKeeper payment?

The scheme will see workers at eligible businesses receive payments of $1,500 a fortnight for the next six months.

In order to receive the funds, businesses need to check they are eligible for the payments and enrol with the ATO. Enrolment will open on Monday 20 April.

They will then receive a monthly payment for each eligible employee paid by the business in the previous month.

The payments will flow from the first week of May, and will be backdated to cover any payments made by businesses between 30 March and the end of April.

The ATO said today, businesses have to make sure they have and will do these three things:

  • They have paid eligible employees at least $1,500 a fortnight before tax for the period between 30 March and 30 April. And these payments need to have been made by the end of April to make sure they’ll receive the JobKeeper payment in the first week of May;

  • Additionally, businesses need to make sure they meet the eligibility requirements. These requirements are generally that the business has seen a fall in turnover of at least 30 per cent. This is the full run-down of who is eligible.

  • And businesses need to make sure they enrol in the JobKeeper program once enrolment opens on 20 April.

“The ATO website has all the information employers need to know about how to get ready. Alternatively, contact your tax representative for assistance and advice specific to your circumstances,” O’Halloran said.

“We know this payment is vital for the community, and we want every eligible employer to be ready to receive the JobKeeper Payments to help keep Australians in jobs.”
