Yahoo Finance Diego Maradona stable, recovering after undergoing surgery for a subdural hematoma
Argentina soccer icon Diego Maradona is in stable condition and recovering at a private health clinic after undergoing brain surgery last week, his psychologist told The Associated Press.
Maradona underwent surgery for a subdural hematoma, or bleeding between the brain and skull. His doctor said it was likely caused by an accident, but Maradona didn’t remember what happened, per the report.
The 60-year-old, his psychologist Diego Diaz said, needs therapy and “fundamentally family support” to recover.
“Diego Maradona, in certain issues, is just like everyone else ... with the same limitations, difficulties and advantages that any human being has,” Díaz told The Associated Press. “The important thing today is that he is stabilized, that he is controlled in terms of pharmacological management, the levels of food and rest.
“And then he will be able to continue with a system according to a patient like Diego Maradona. This has to do with the presence of therapeutic companions, nurses, an interdisciplinary team and, fundamentally, his family.”
Maradona is widely considered to be one of the best players of all time, and helped lead Argentina to its 1986 World Cup win while appearing with them on the world stage in 1982, 1990 and 1994. He was suspended during the final World Cup, however, for failing a drug test.
The former Argentinian national team coach currently serves as the manager of Primera Division club Gimnasia de La Plata.
