Arcimoto (NASDAQ:FUV) dips 13% this week as increasing losses might not be inspiring confidence among its investors

Even the best investor on earth makes unsuccessful investments. But it should be a priority to avoid stomach churning catastrophes, wherever possible. We wouldn't blame Arcimoto, Inc. (NASDAQ:FUV) shareholders if they were still in shock after the stock dropped like a lead balloon, down 82% in just one year. A loss like this is a stark reminder that portfolio diversification is important. However, the longer term returns haven't been so bad, with the stock down 9.1% in the last three years. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 26% in the last 90 days. We really hope anyone holding through that price crash has a diversified portfolio. Even when you lose money, you don't have to lose the lesson.

Since Arcimoto has shed US$16m from its value in the past 7 days, let's see if the longer term decline has been driven by the business' economics.

View our latest analysis for Arcimoto

Arcimoto wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

In the last twelve months, Arcimoto increased its revenue by 23%. We think that is pretty nice growth. However, it seems like the market wanted more, since the share price is down 82%. One fear might be that the company might be losing too much money and will need to raise more. It seems that the market has concerns about the future, because that share price action does not seem to reflect the revenue growth at all.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. A Different Perspective

Arcimoto shareholders are down 82% for the year, falling short of the market return. The market shed around 15%, no doubt weighing on the stock price. Shareholders have lost 3.0% per year over the last three years, so the share price drop has become steeper, over the last year; a potential symptom of as yet unsolved challenges. Although Baron Rothschild famously said to "buy when there's blood in the streets, even if the blood is your own", he also focusses on high quality stocks with solid prospects. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For instance, we've identified 3 warning signs for Arcimoto that you should be aware of.
