Anthony LaPaglia and Gia Carides Sell Los Angeles Estate at Steep Discount

SELLERS: Anthony LaPaglia and Gia Carides
LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA
PRICE: $8,200,000
SIZE: (approx.) 5,500 square feet, 5 bedrooms, 6.5 bathrooms plus guesthouse and staff quarters

YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Divorcing Australian actors Anthony LaPaglia and Gia Carides sold their long-time compound in the quietly ritzy Brentwood Park neighborhood in Los Angeles for $8.2 million. The sale price, a significant sum by any standard, is not insignificantly almost $800,000 less than the last asking price of just under $9 million and a whopping nearly $3.8 million below the in-hindsight much too aggressively optimistic original asking price of not quite $12 million. A careful parse of property records indicates the erstwhile couple, married for about 17 years, acquired the half-acre spread in November 2003 for an undisclosed amount from Mark and Dawn Ostroff, he a financier and she the high-powered former President of Entertainment at The CW and, currently, President of Condé Nast Entertainment.

The main house, a renovated, upgraded and expanded 1940s Cape Cod, measures in at about 5,500-square-feet according to online resources and incorporates an airy center hall entry, ample formal living and dining rooms — the former with French doors set on either side of a fireplace, and an itty-bitty library nook. A separate family room has high ceilings, exposed brick walls, and an entire wall of transom-topped glass doors that lead to the garden while the up-to-date kitchen and sunny, east-facing breakfast nook open through French doors to an expansive deck that overlooks the swimming pool. The main house’s five bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms include two en suite bedrooms on the ground floor ideally suited for guests or older children plus two additional en suite guest/family bedrooms on the upper level along with a master suite composed of huge bedroom with sitting area and fireplace, dual closets, and two vintage-style bathrooms with pedestal sinks and classic penny tile flooring. A substantial detached structure alongside the swimming pool opposite the rear of the main house incorporates a concrete-floored pool house lounge, gym, spacious guest quarters, separate staff suite, and three-car garage. In addition to the roomy dining deck outside the kitchen and the brick terrace ringed swimming pool, the gated grounds encompass an immense front lawn divided by a brick path that curves up to the front door and a multi-purpose sport court tucked tightly between the house and an exceptionally tall and thick hedge.

In the mid-1990s, LaPaglia, an Emmy and Golden Globe winning actor best known for his frequent portrayals of cops and gangsters, shelled out $1.3 million for an approximately 3,500-square-foot, two-unit Italianate townhouse in New York City’s West Village that was sold in June 2012 for $7 million to real estate magnate Ara Hovnanian.
