Anthony Davis could miss Lakers' bubble opener vs. Clippers with eye injury

The NBA bubble premiere’s showcase game might be missing a key player.

Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis may miss Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers with an eye injury.

Davis got poked in the right eye by Michael Carter-Williams in a Saturday scrimmage against the Orlando Magic. The Orange County Register reports that Davis showed up to Tuesday’s practice wearing sunglasses and watched from courtside as his teammates ran drills.

Head coach Frank Vogel told reporters that he might not be ready for Thursday’s game.

“He’s day to day and while he’s still dealing with discomfort, there is some concern that he could potentially not play Thursday,” Vogel said, via the Register. “But we’re hopeful that he does and we’ll see how that plays out.”

Lakers looking to maintain top seed in West

With eight games remaining before the start of the playoffs, the Lakers hold a 5.5-game lead over the Clippers for first place in the West. Their spot atop the conference appears secure, and the Lakers will likely take a cautious approach with playing their star forward.

Thursday’s game, of course, isn’t void of stakes. A win over the Clippers would go a long way in securing the top seed in the West. But the Clippers have plenty of roster questions of their own two days out from the restart of their season.

Who will play for Clippers?

Lou Williams is in the midst of a 10-day quarantine after visiting an Atlanta strip club for chicken wings during an excused absence for his grandfather’s funeral. He won’t be eligible to play Thursday against the Lakers or Saturday against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Patrick Beverley’s and Montrezl Harrell’s statuses for Thursday remain unclear after they took excused absences to leave the bubble. Clippers coach Doc Rivers has largely declined to provide status updates as his roster has been in flux since players started to report to the bubble.

Meanwhile, the Lakers will definitely have a different backcourt look from the regular season with starting guard Avery Bradley opting out of the bubble and backup Rajon Rondo suffering a broken thumb.
