Irish DJ and presenter Annie Mac is to leave BBC Radio 1 after 17 years.

The 42-year-old, who has fronted live gigs and interviewed some of the biggest names in the music industry, said it was “wonderful to be leaving with a huge smile on my face.”

In a statement published on twitter on Monday, the mother of two said it was hard to articulate what her job meant to her before describing the “magic” of radio.

“I have never walked out of the studio feeling lighter and happier than when I walked in.

“So why leave? It’s all about time really. I need more time to see my kids in the evenings now they are both in school. I would like more time to write fiction and create podcasts,” she said.

Mac is the host of the ‘Changes’ podcast, in which she speaks to artists, writers, musicians and a host of people about the biggest changes in their life.

In her tweet she went on to directly address her listeners and said: “I have fallen in and out of love, moved homes, climbed up the career ladder, got married and became a mother twice over alongside you doing your own versions of the same.

“Thank you for allowing me into your lives. Thank you for brightening my days.”

Announcing her departure as part of a huge line-up of change, Radio 1 tweeted: “Sending all of our love, appreciation and luck for the future to Annie."

Clara Amfo is expected to take over as the host of BBC Radio 1’s Future Sounds from September 2021, the Metro reported.

She will host the show from Monday to Thursday 6pm to 8pm starting in September this year.
