AMP's (ASX:AMP) Stock Price Has Reduced 73% In The Past Five Years

We think intelligent long term investing is the way to go. But unfortunately, some companies simply don't succeed. For example, after five long years the AMP Limited (ASX:AMP) share price is a whole 73% lower. We certainly feel for shareholders who bought near the top. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 12% in the last three months. We note that the company has reported results fairly recently; and the market is hardly delighted. You can check out the latest numbers in our company report.

AMP isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

In the last half decade, AMP saw its revenue increase by 1.0% per year. That's not a very high growth rate considering it doesn't make profits. Nonetheless, it's fair to say the rapidly declining share price (down 12%, compound, over five years) suggests the market is very disappointed with this level of growth. We'd be pretty cautious about this one, although the sell-off may be too severe. We'd recommend focussing any further research on the likelihood of profitability in the foreseeable future, given the muted revenue growth.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. You can see what analysts are predicting for AMP in this interactive graph of future profit estimates.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We've already covered AMP's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Its history of dividend payouts mean that AMP's TSR, which was a 67% drop over the last 5 years, was not as bad as the share price return.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 3.2% in the twelve months, AMP shareholders did even worse, losing 7.6%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 11% doled out over the last five years. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for AMP (of which 1 is potentially serious!) you should know about.
