Amazon is launching a new shopping event ahead of the holiday season. Amazon Prime Big Deal Days is coming up, and there are plenty of questions about when it is and how it works.

At a time when many Aussies are struggling to get by in the cost-of-living crisis, the shopping frenzy could save you plenty of money as we approach one of the most expensive times of the year.

This is also the first time Aussies will have access to a major Amazon sale so close to the holiday season, as the annual Prime Day sales are in July.

Yahoo Finance is here to answer all your questions about when the sale is, how it works and what items you can get.

When is Amazon’s Big Deal Days?

Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days shopping event will officially run from October 10 at 00:01 AEDT through to midnight October 11, and will offer Prime members exclusive access to deals.

How do the sales work?

This is not the first time Amazon has launched a major sales event, and there will be shoppers prepared to get the best deals. So how can you be one too?

For starters, you’ll only get the discounted price if you place the order during the event. As per previous Prime Days, there are two types of deals you can get.

One is a Deal of the Day. This is when the discounted price will only last for 24 hours and will typically feature Amazon’s best-sellers.

The second is Lightning Deals. These are flash deals that only run on specific products and are offered for a short period of time - some for only a few hours or until the stock is gone. These deals can drop as frequently as every five minutes.

What’s the difference between Big Deal Days and Amazon Prime Day?

Basically, nothing. Amazon’s Big Deal Days is the same as Amazon Prime Day except, instead of being held in July, it is being held in October - presumably to catch those looking to get a head start on their Christmas shopping.

What products are on sale?

Prime members will get exclusive access to deals from around 40 popular household brands, with everything from toys to cleaning products.

For those who have young kids, or know someone who does, there are fan favourites from Barbie, Bluey, Disney and Fisher-Price that will be on sale.

Or, if you have an upcoming boozy celebration, Penfolds, Moet & Chandon and even Veuve Clicquot will also be marked down.

To help make cleaning easier after a family or friends get together, Finish, OMO and Scrub Daddy products will also be on sale.

And for gamers and the tech savvy, savings can be made on PlayStation, Nintendo, BOSE and Logitech products.

What you need to access the sales

Prime Big Deal Days is only available to Prime members exclusively, so you would need to join up, and don’t forget to remember your login and password details.

New customers in Australia can join Prime with a 30-day free trial, and then pay $9.99 per month, or $79 for an annual membership.

Don’t forget to shop around

While there will be some great deals available through Amazon, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t shop around.

Many Aussie retailers - like JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman and Bunnings - do price matching, or may even try to compete by offering their own deals.
