Alec Baldwin makes first public appearance since Halyna Hutchins fatal shooting on Rust set

Alec Baldwin made his first public appearance since he fatally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of film Rust.

The actor, 63, was master of ceremonies at human rights event the Ripple of Hope Award Gala in New York City on Thursday evening.

“Thank you for all coming out tonight. It’s great to be together in person. It’s great to be with everyone. My wife and I have six kids, anything to get out of the house for 30 minutes,”he said, earning laughter from the audience.

He had earlier shared an open letter written by members of the cast and crew of Rust, the Western filming in New Mexico when a gun Baldwin was holding went off. Halayna Hutchins was fatally wounded while the film’s director, Joel Souza, was injured.

Signed by more than 20 individuals, the letter denied the production was a “chaotic, dangerous and exploitative workplace”.

It said the public narrative surrounding the incident, that the production was being mismanaged, was “inadequate” and distracts from “what matters the most” - the memory of Ms Hutchins.

It comes after Mr Baldwin said he does not feel guilt over the shooting because “someone is responsible... I know it’s not me”.

In his first interview since the fatal shooting, the actor admitted his Hollywood acting career may be over and he denied pulling the trigger.
